Duchess of Cambridge gives birth to daughter
THE DUKE and Duchess of Cambridge have taken their baby daughter home from hospital after she was born at 8:34am, UK time, on May 2 2015.
The couple posed on the steps of the Lindo wing at London’s St Mary’s hospital holding the newborn Princess who was sound asleep. The name has not been announced.
The Duchess smiled and waved at photographers and fans wearing a lemon-yellow Jenny Packham dress but the couple did not speak to media.
Earlier, Prince William left the hospital to pick up Prince George from their Kensington Palace home and said he was feeling “very happy, thank you very much”.
He carried the young Prince inside to introduce him to his little sister before taking his wife and daughter home separately.
Kensington Palace kept fans and media updated via Twitter and thanked the hospital staff for their care.
“Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have all received”, Kensington Palace tweeted.
The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth at 8:34am on Saturday 2 May, UK time, after being rushed to hospital at 6am.
The baby weighs 3.7 kilograms (8 lbs 3oz) and Kensington Palace confirmed “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”
Meanwhile, the Queen was spotted wearing a pink coat thought to be a tribute to her new great granddaughter.
A large crowd had gathered outside the hospital and at the gates of Buckingham Palace where the official easel was placed containing the announcement.
The new baby is the first Princess of Cambridge to be born for more than 180 years.
The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth at the exclusive Lindo Wing at St Mary’s hospital in west London. It’s the same place Prince William, Prince Harry and Prince George were born.
The birth took just over three hours with the official announcement delayed until The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families had all been informed.
The Duchess went into labour at around 6am UK time and official confirmation of the birth was delivered via Twitter shortly afterwards.
Prince Harry was told the news while watching the AFL in Perth. The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall are also said to be “absolutely delighted” at the arrival of their granddaughter.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron along with other political leaders took to Twitter to congratulate the couple.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott released a statement wishing the young Princess a “long and happy life.”
“I am sure that the Princess and her older brother, Prince George, will in time develop a deep familiarity and love of Australia, feelings the rest of their family already share,” he said.
Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove also sent congratulations.
